Where Is the Plantaris?
The Plantaris muscle runs behind the outer knee across the back of the lower leg and attaches to the
heel bone. Together with the gastrocnemius, and soleus, they are grouped as the triceps surae muscle.
What are the Symptoms of a Plantaris Tear?
Popping noise behind the knee. Bruising on the back of the knee.
Pain radiating down the calf muscle across through the inside (medial).
What is The Function of the Plantaris?
Flexes the leg at the knee.
Origin and Insertion of Plantaris
Origin: Lateral supracondylar ridge of femur (Outside top of calf muscle)
Insertion: Tendo calcaneus (Inner heel)
Origin and Insertion of Gluteus Medius
Origin:
Around the top of the butt. Outer surface of ilium between posterior and middle gluteal lines
Insertion:
Attaches to the top of the bone. Posterolateral surface of greater trocanter of femur
FACT:
10% of the population do not have this muscle.
